5. Data processing in the SimpleVario app

This section does not concern this website but the SimpleVario app for Apple Watch itself.

Bluetooth, location and motion: SimpleVario connects via Bluetooth to an external vario (e.g. XC Tracer) and shows its measurements (altitude, climb/sink, speed, glide ratio) live. If no external vario is connected, the app uses the watch's GPS location and motion sensors instead to calculate the same values itself. All of this data is processed on the watch only, is not stored anywhere and is not transmitted to us or to third parties.

Workout session (HealthKit): To keep the display and the app active during the flight, SimpleVario starts a workout session via Apple HealthKit. This data also stays on the device under watchOS's normal HealthKit management and is neither read nor transmitted by us.

Terrain height at the landing site (Open-Meteo): When you mark a landing site in the settings, the app requests the terrain height of those coordinates from the free service Open-Meteo (open-meteo.com) so that the final glide knows the altitude of your landing site. If the landing site does not yet have an altitude, the app repeats the request when it starts and when you reopen it. The coordinates of the landing site are transmitted to Open-Meteo's servers. No other personal data is sent, and no user account or API key is used. If the request fails, the app shows “Elevation Unknown” instead of an estimated altitude. More information: Open-Meteo's terms and privacy information (open-meteo.com/en/terms).

Settings: The paired vario device, the volume, the minimum arrival altitude, the assumed glide ratio, the language and the marked landing site are stored locally on the watch (UserDefaults) so that they survive a restart of the app. These settings do not leave the device, except for the terrain height request above.

There is no recording of flight or measurement data: all vario values are only shown live and are never stored. The app contains no tracking, no advertising and no analytics tools.
